I heard that there are no teaching rounds at Tisch and that the residents have to relate to private attendings who do not teach. What is the program doing to address this?
Last year, new bedside teaching rounds were added to Tisch hospital. Three times a week, a faculty member meets with each team to conduct formal rounds at the bedside. These rounds have been extremely successful. Under the guidance of the chief of the medical service at Tisch, the ward services are being restructured to maximize teaching and minimize the number of attendings with whom house staff must relate. Starting in academic year 07-08, each house staff officer and each admitting attending will be assigned to one of 4-5 “firms.” Whenever house staff rotate through Tisch, they will be part of the same firm. Thus smaller groups of attendings will be relating to smaller groups of house staff, providing for more continuity and better education. In addition, each firm will have a hospitalist assigned to it. The non-teaching service will continue to funnel the less acute and less interesting cases away from housestaff.
