What is AVS?

Address Verification System (AVS) matches the known address information on file at the cardholders issuing bank’s AVS database against the billing address information provided by the consumer/merchant. If the information does not match, the transaction is declined. Transactions declined due to non-match of AVS are still pre-authorized (reserved/hold amount that will decrease the consumers limit) by the credit card network, but the sale amount will not be charged to the credit card holder’s account and will not be deposited to your bank account. Merchants have the option of selecting the level of match required for an approved transaction. Refer to the FRISK section of the Online Documentation for more information regarding configuring AVS options. The service only applies to credit card transactions.

A. Address Verification Service is a fraud prevention tool provided for non face-to-face transactions, such as mail, telephone and Internet orders. When a transaction is key-entered on a terminal or PC, and properly identified as a mail/telephone transaction, the merchant is prompted for a street address and zip code (Internet orders use the “ship to” address a shopper provides). During the authorization process, an additional check is made to validate that the shipping information for the cardholder matches the address on record for the cardholder’s account. A result code is returned indicating a match, a partial match, or no match. The merchant then has the opportunity to review the transaction more closely before shipping goods. Address Verification Service (AVS) is a security feature to help prevent fraud. The customer enters their billing address, and it is verified against the address on file for that credit card number.

AVS stands for Address Verification Service. This service allows merchants to compare the billing address provided with a transaction with the billing address on file at the customers issuing bank and to use that information to determine whether to accept a transaction. Use of this service is included with each standard Authorize.Net CNP Payment Gateway account and is highly recommended for all e-commerce and MOTO transactions. For more information about AVS, please see the Merchant Interface Help Files.
