What is a “chain letter” in e-mail?
A chain letter is defined as a message that is sent multiple times to multiple recipients, regardless of origin or content. You can usually recognize chain letters by the letters FW or FWD in the subject heading. The letter may contain directions to send the message to several others. Chain letters often include lists of jokes, e-mail attachments, inspirational messages, or other items that one might want to share with others. Chain letters are forbidden by the district’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) because multiple copies of e-mail create a burden for the system, and may contain damaging viruses. If you receive a chain letter, please delete it. Do not forward it. Do not cut the contents of the e-mail and paste into a new e-mail to forward, because this just starts a new chain letter. If you receive something of this nature that you would like to share, please share it through your home, personal accounts.
