What is an Esophagram or Barium Swallow?
An esophagram is that portion of an upper gastrointestinal series that examines the throat and esophagus. The patient is given a mixture of barium and water to drink. The radiologist follows the movement of the barium through the throat and esophagus using fluoroscopy, and a state licensed, ARRT (American Registry of Radiological Technologists) certified technologist takes a series of X-rays. A barium swallow is used to help diagnose diseases and other problems that affect the throat and esophagus.
