What does milkweed grow into?
Common milkweed (Asclepias) is a large plant, often growing 6 feet or more in height, which is a crucial food source for the monarch butterfly (and others). It is most notable for its large seedpods, filled with feathery white seeds. It blooms in summer in zone 5, with a coppery-pink, round blossom which provides nectar. The leaves catch water for many of the smaller forms of wildlife, and are the exclusive food of the monarch larvae. This is an essential plant for roadside, meadow and naturalistic habitats. A hybrid cultivar (A. tuberosa) is available from many online and mail-order sources, but this is not the native variety.
