What are Mosses and Liverworts?
Bryology is the scientific term for the study of mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Bryophytes are green land plants that reproduce by means of spores as opposed to seeds. They are found growing on soil, rocks and/or trees throughout the world. They are sensitive indicators of water and air pollution, in that they absorb mineral nutrients directly into their leaves and stems. Bryophytes often play key roles in the development of conservation management policies and ecosystem restoration projects.
