How does Extended Validation work?
Your web browser will display a green address bar when visiting a web site that has been secured by a valid EV SSL Certificate. For example, when you visit this page at it’s secure location, Internet Explorer 7 will turn the address bar green. Also, on the righthand side of the address bar you will notice a box which alternates between your legal company name and the certificate authority which issued the EV Certificate. For those of us not using IE7, here is what it looks like: It is anticipated that other major browsers will soon include similar functionality.
High-security browsers, such as the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox, recognize when an SSL certificate has been authenticated using Extended Validation. In addition to showing https in the web address and a closed padlock icon to indicate an encrypted session, the browser address bar turns green. The name of the organization and of the certificate authority that authenticated the information appears next to the web address. Users can see at a glance that the web site has met the industry’s highest standard for authentication.
