Any pine cones you collect now will probably be very tatty and half rotten. Is there a Country Park near you – probably some pine trees there. Perhaps for this year you visit a garden centre – most sell them – then next summer take your lad out to collect them and store them somewhere dry, ready for Christmas. I have two pine trees in my garden – a Scots Pine (small cones) and a Corsican pine (medium size cones) and take bags full of them to the tip every summer because nobody bothers to collect them for Christmas decorations any more. We have a school in the street where I live and the kids now just use them as soft “stones” to kick around and throw at each other. As well as tree decorations, the larger cones when glued together in a ring, or double ring, then varnished, make stunning door decorations, perhaps with a sprig of holly and mistletoe dangling from the centre; an idea for next year maybe?
