Corona is the ionization of air molecules (conduction of charges) in very close proximity to energized wires. This ionization can result in a buzzing or crackling noise sometimes being heard near the line, and can be more noticeable on humid or overcast days. By definition, corona is a luminous discharge due to ionization of the air surrounding a conductor caused by a voltage gradient exceeding a certain critical value.
