Silica (SiO2) is a hard glassy material found in quartz, sand and opal. It is the basic component of glass as well as of ceramic glazes and is insoluble in water or acids except hydrofluoric acid. Silica is inert. This means it is chemically inactive. Silica should not be confused with silicon.
