How are the new PMC URLs formulated?

0

Considerable thought has been given to the design of URLs in the new PMC system. These new URLs follow best practices recommended by the W3C, Google, and are compatible with the new Entrez URL standards. Specifically, they are designed to be: • Simple, intuitive, and “hackable” (users should be able to modify URLs in their browser’s address bar and get sensible results) • Consistent across the NCBI site • Resource-oriented, as opposed to action-oriented (nouns not verbs) • Stable, yet extensible (new URLs won’t require changes to old URLs) • Technology-neutral (hiding CGI script names and file extensions) Note that all of the Non-Canonical URLs will continue to work. Now, when you access a page through one of the Non-Canonical URLs, your browser will be redirected to the new location. • Old URLs are relative to http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov • New URLs are relative to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc Type Previous Non-Canonical URL New Canonical URL Journal /tocrender.fcgi?domain=pnas
