How many kinds of cows are there?
We divide cows into two kinds: dairy cows and beef cows. Dairy cows give us milk, beef cows give us meat. But there are hundreds of different breeds of cows, and some are better for making milk and others better for making steaks. Most of our dairy cows are black-and-white Holsteins. Most of our beef cows are Black Angus. Q: Where are the cows raised? A. In America, most of our dairy cows are raised in Wisconsin and California. Most of our beef cows are raised in Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and California. But many of the cows that we turn into beef are shipped in from other countries, like Canada and Mexico. Q: Why is hamburger cheap and steak expensive? A: Steaks and other primal cuts like roasts come from just a few parts of the cow, from muscles along the ribs and loin that haven’t gotten so much exercise that they’re lean and tough.
