What is an “outlet mall”?
Outlet malls are an idea conceived in the U.S. in the 1980s. Japan’s first outlet mall was opened in 1993 and in the years since, new malls have been opening one after the other all over the nation, becoming more and more popular as time passes. At the beginning most outlet malls were believed to sell only stock quantities and / or damaged goods but that image is now changing. Modern malls enable visitors to shop all day long and offer access to the most recognizable brand-name products, all in a large resort like facility. The products sold at outlet malls today are actually a given makers’ samples (some samples never actually went into production and so have increased value for collectors and many have associated rarity value because they are sold only in such malls), previous year stock and less than perfect goods.
