Who produces nuclear waste?
Nuclear power stations, industrial processes, medical processes, research institutions and national defence all produce radioactive waste. Several major nuclear sites are authorised and licensed to discharge radioactive liquid and gaseous waste (Figure 1). Site operators must ensure that they meet their authorised discharge conditions and that the radiation discharges to the environment do not exceed set dose limits.
