What was Mr. Danzig’s crime?
He expressed his free speech right by writing a letter to the editor in The Salt Lake Tribune protesting the church’s firing of BYU adjunct professor Jeffrey Nielsen. Mr. Nielson was fired from BYU because he published a column in SLC Tribune saying that the LDS Church was in the wrong to oppose gay marriage and also wrong to enlist other Mormons to call for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Two years have gone by since Danzig’s letter appeared in the June 14, 2006, issue of the SLC Tribune. “I was troubled that my church requested I violate my own conscience to write in support of an amendment I feel is contrary to the constitution and to the gospel of Christ,” Danzig told the SLC Tribune.
