Why does Santa Claus wear a red suit?
Legend says that the modern image of Santa Claus was created by commercial artist Haddon Sunblom for a 1931 soft drinks advertising campaign. The Santa image was introduced to encourage customers to drink the sweet beverage in all seasons, not only in the hot summer weather. In fact, the red-suited whiskery image of Santa had already been standardized by the 1920’s. The advertising did cement this image with the public, especially with children during the holiday season. The red colour of Santa’s suit was not invented for the adverts but was actually introduced by American Civil War artist Thomas Nast for Harper’s Weekly in 1862. His image of Santa was a maker of toys with a flowing white bead and fur suit. Previously Santa Claus had been depicted variously as an elf, a sprite-like child or a Gandalf-like wizard in red, blue, green or purple suits.
