What is Ben Nevis like?
Ben Nevis, at an altitide of 1344m is Britain’s highest mountain. It forms a horse-shoe shaped ridge with Carn Mor Dearg, the massive Nevis dwarfing the latter. The two mountains are connected by a narrow ridge with a rocky crest. The easiest ascent of “The Ben” is from Glen Nevis following the old road which was constructed to service the weather observatory, now in ruins near the summit. The first hour of the ascent is steep and difficult, especially if you haven’t warmed up. It soon levels out, however, for the next third – a pleasant incline with potentially stunning views in the right weather. The zig-zag to the summit feels less arduous than the beginning of the trek and you are rewarded with a large summit, featuring a cairn, trig point and abandoned weather observatory.
