Why Select Hdpe Pipe?
For over 40 years, other energy utilities, i.e., natural gas have used polyethylene pipe for new piping systems and are systematically engaging in a process to replace concrete, cast iron and steel pipe with polyethylene. Historically, while energy utilities have at least tried to use the best materials available to transport natural gas because of its potential harm to the public, water utilities have chosen to go with “whatever works” because water leaks are rarely harmful to the public. As a result water losses have typically been as much as 30% due to leaks in the piping system. These losses were only acceptable because of the prevailing view that fresh water is unlimited, free and safe. But of course water is neither free or unlimited – it costs money to pump it out of the ground and to purify it – and when it is wasted because of a leak in the piping system, the economic and ecological cost is passed on to the customer as an operating expense. Worse yet, water is not safe when it
