Is hydrogen fuel safe?
Yes. Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles are as safe or safer than conventional gasoline vehicles. Like gasoline, hydrogen is explosive and flammable. However, because any hydrogen fuel leak rapidly disperses, there is no dangerous pooling of fuel that could ignite in an accident or during a leak. Safety is a priority in all aspects of hydrogen energy production, storage, distribution and use. For example, hydrogen detectors are used at refuelling stations and on vehicles. Codes and standards governing the use of hydrogen as a transportation fuel are being developed nationally and internationally.
