Are 3 heads better than 2?
If you do a lot of recording, the 3-head system has advantages. With 3 heads that separately control erase, record and playback, you can listen to the signal recorded on the tape as you record. And you can check the sound quality against the tape source and quickly adjust bias and signal levels. A 2-head cassette deck uses a single head for both recording and playback; when you monitor while recording, you hear the source signal rather than what’s on your tape. The second head is for erasing. This system works well for recording and playback.
