What is the Career Planning Tool (CPT)?
The CPT is an interactive database application, created using Microsoft Access 2000, that allows users to conduct a “competency gap analysis” and automatically generate a plan for developing needed competencies. The CPT is based on information found in the DON Civilian Career Path Guide (CPG) for the Management of Technology, Information and Knowledge. The CPG outlines a career development process, defines the work performed in terms of competencies for various information management/information technology and knowledge management (IM/IT & KM) career areas and job roles, and provides a Career Progression Plan (CPP) to use when outlining a developmental strategy. The CPT automates both the competency information as well as the CPP. In essence the CPT and the CPG are the interactive and paper-based versions, respectively, of the same information.
