What are Real Application Clusters (RAC)?
Real Application Clusters (RAC) is the Oracle trade name for its database server cluster product and provides for load-balancing, scalability and automatic failover protection in case of server failure (the key word here being server failure not site failure, which is provided by Oracle’s DataGuard product). Essentially, Oracle RAC is a parallelization product that keeps the Oracle database server product available and running across a set of multiple server nodes providing Load-Balancing, Scalability, Flexibility and High-Availability. Technically, an Oracle RAC Cluster is group of two or more parallelized server nodes, linked together with each other through redundant network connections to form a singly logical machine, providing for load-balancing and high-availability against server failure typically within a small geographical site. Oracle RAC Extended Distance Clusters are also available to provide for site failure but are not recommended and, are rarely used due to the high cos
