What is freezing fog?
A Freezing Fog is a really interesting formation, and relatively few people know about it. It is actually fairly simple. First, fog is basically a cloud near the ground. Many clouds exist in what is called a “supercooled” state, which means that the droplets in the cloud are still in their liquid state, even though the temperature is well below freezing. Although this situation is rarer nearer the ground, it still occurs, and then is called “freezing fog.” Since Mount Washington sits in such a unique locale, freezing fog is a common occurrence, and leads to the formation of rime ice, for which the mountain is famous.
