What is Champix?
Champix (Varenicline) is a non-nicotine tablet which works by mimicking the effects of nicotine to prevent common withdrawal symptoms such as craving and irritability. It also blocks the effects of nicotine so smoking will become less rewarding and pleasurable. It is very effective and has been used worldwide to help smokers to stop. A course lasts three months though you can take it for longer if your doctor thinks you need to. You start the course of Champix on a low dose which gradually increases during the first week of treatment. During this time you can carry on smoking though you should aim to set a quit date during the second week of the course. Remember, Champix will gradually reduce the pleasure that you get from nicotine this should make it easier to set a quit date. Champix is only available on prescription and though it will suit most people, its worth talking it through with you GP or pharmacist before you start the course.
