What is a synchronous speed?
Synchronous speed is the speed which is natural for the generator compared with the system speed. The system speed, electrically speaking, may be 50 or 60Hz, whereas for a generator the mechanical speed is dependent on the sort of generator it is. A motor may be designed to run at synchronous speed (eg in an electric clock) or with a different design, a bit less, as in the case of a squirrel cage motor. Hydro generators run slower than steam turbine generators.
