Does codeine contain morphine?
Codeine and morphine are both opioid analgesics which are derived from the poppy plant. Because they are derived from the same plant, they contain some of the same chemical properties, and both bind to opioid receptors in the brain. However, morphine is much more powerful, codeine is considered a “weak” opioid analgesic, (is used in parts of tussin-type cough syrups) whereas morphine is most often prescribed for severe pain, such as post-surgical.
