How is tick fever treated and prevented?
Cattle suffering from tick fever can be successfully treated if they are diagnosed early. Imidocarb (Imizol® or Imidox®) is the best drug for this purpose. Oxytetracycline antibiotic can also be used to treat anaplasmosis. Remember that these drugs have withholding periods for both meat and milk. Options used for prevention are: • vaccinate with tick fever vaccine • use tick fever-resistant cattle • keep animals tick-free • expose weaners to cattle ticks deliberately • use Imidocarb (Imizol® or Imidox®) • take the risk and accept the losses by doing nothing.
