What is a fungal nail infection?
The most common infection of the nails is caused by an organism known as a fungus. Fungal nail infections, or onychomycosis, are more common on the toenails than the fingernails and affect about 12% of all Americans. Approximately 25% of people by the age of 40, and 40% of people older than 40 have fungal nail infections! Onychomycosis tends to run in families because of an inherited tendency to contract the infection, but not everyone is susceptible. Fungal nail infections are rare in children.
