What will Village Council do next?
We cannot predict what will happen if the voters retain the MFD by defeating the ballot. However several scenarios can occur. First, the Village Council can proceed to abolish the Mariemont Fire Department and join the LMFR regardless of the outcome of the election on May 5, 2009. Second, according to one council member, the Village will proceed to put a 5 mill levy on the November 2009 election ballot in order to pay for the continued operation of the Mariemont Fire Department. Village Council may also consider raising revenue through increasing the Village income tax or decreasing the credit it allows for earnings taxes paid to other municipalities. Finally, the Council Minutes, for the March 9, 2009, report that if the ballot fails it will consider staff reductions, specifically it will lay-off 2 fire fighters, 1 police officer, and 1 maintenance worker.
