Do Africans wear jeans and tee shirts?
A. Yes! Africans today are very fashion-conscious and wear a wide range of clothing styles, including tee shirts, jeans, sportswear and casual outfits for home and office. Many school children in Africa are required to wear uniforms, which are often purchased from local tailor shops. Most clothing worn in Africa is purchased ready-made from shops or is made-to-order by tailors, who often work from pictures in clothing catalogues and fashion magazines. On special occasions, traditional hand-woven textiles may be worn and/or fashioned into tailored garments. Many of the earlier examples of African textile arts on view in the “TxtStyles” exhibition reflect older, more traditional forms of attire appropriate to age, gender and status.
