How is living kidney donation done?
A potential living donor for kidney transplant must undergo a thorough medical evaluation similar to the one the recipient goes through. The physician will select a donor who matches the recipient in regard to A/B/O blood type and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) compatibility. After the surgery, the donor should receive annual physician follow-up visits and should closely monitor his or her blood pressure. If a living donor transplant is not possible, the recipient will be placed on the waiting list for a deceased donor organ.
