Which feed type is good for hot humid tropical environment (e.g. Africa), Mash or Pellet?
MASH vs. PELLET. Given the choice birds prefer mash, because feed naturally by selection. A days ration of pellet feed can be consumed in 30minutes leaving ample time to the bored birds to develop habits such as cannibalism, vent and feather peckin – in short pellet – fed birds exhibits aggressive behaviour. It takes birds 3.5 hours to finish a days ration of mash, keeping birds more occupied, doing other necessary exercises between feeding. Due to lack of exercise, fat deposition is common among pellet fed birds. Birds on pelleted feed void more moisture-laden faeces, giving rise to wet, sodden litter, high ambient humidity and ammonia in the poultry house that predisposes the birds to both protozoa’s and bacterial diseases, like Coccidiosis, Collibacillosis, etc. Because pellets are grinded into powder before binding excess dust is generated during inclement weather which predisposes birds to respiratory diseases such as CRD.
