What is authority resolution?
Authority resolution is the first phase of XRI resolution in which the authority component of an XRI is resolved into an XRD describing the final target authority (the authority identified by the rightmost subsegment). The authority resolution protocol uses HTTP(S) and a URI construction algorithm to resolve each subsegment from left to right, starting with the community root authority subsegment (identified either by a Global Context Symbol or a cross-reference). Authority resolution is also defined for IRI authorities (DNS names or IP addresses) via a single HTTP(S) request to an HTTP URL composed of the DNS name or IP address as the authority component.
