Where are the journals?

Most of the library’s print journals are on the fourth floor in alphabetical order by title. The exceptions are: (1) the most current issues of our journals, which are shelved alphabetically by title in the current serials reading room on the first floor; (2) issues older than 1950, which are in storage (just ask at the Access Services desk to have them retrieved); and (3) issues that have been microfilmed, which are in the microform area on the first floor in the southwest corner.

In Townsville, journals are found on the north (main entrance) side of the Library building. Journals up to Dewey number 519 are on the first floor and journals above Dewy number 519 are on the second floor. Current journals on all subjects are displayed near the stairs on the first floor. On the Cairns campus, journals are found on the second floor of the Library building. They are on your right as you come from the lift or the main stairwell. Current periodicals are displayed in the reading area located behind the general access computers on the second floor.

• Print journals are alphabetically organized on the third floor, and cannot usually be borrowed • Print issues from the current year are in a separate section of the stacks, to the left of the library entrance • Don’t forget about electronic access to journals. Check journal titles in the Library Catalogue (MUSE), to see if we have the electronic version. You have to type in the full, correct title — not the abbreviated title — when using the Catalogue. Access the Library Catalogue at http://muse.mcgill.ca/F Most electronic journals can be accessed remotely if you are logged into the McGill network with your modem-accessed DAS account or with a high-speed VPN connection. You can hyperlink to most of the electronic journals directly through the Library Catalogue, or you can browse the Life Sciences Library’s list of Full-Text Biomedical Journals.

Each site has a dedicated area for journals inside the Information Services Centre/Library. Please check layout maps displayed at entrances and near the Service Desk areas for precise locations.

The majority of the Library’s journals are available electronically. Use Journals A–Z to gain access to them. Journals kept in the Library are in several places on the first floor. Recent issues are in the Pavilion, and bound issues are toward the back of the building, across from the Reference collection. Microfiche and microfilm are available around the corner from the Reference Desk. Please see How to Find a Periodical Article for additional information or ask a librarian for help locating a particular issue.
