Where do red wolves live?
Red wolves live in the wild in northeastern North Carolina, in the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge region. There are two small island projects off the coast of the southeastern United States. There is also a captive red wolf population distributed in 32 facilities across the nation. Based on fossil and archaeological evidence, the original red wolf range extended throughout the Southeast, from the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, north to the Ohio River valley and central Pennsylvania, and west to central Texas and southeastern Missouri. Some biologists believe the red wolf lived as far north as southeastern Canada. At least one archaeological specimen has been found in North Carolina. In addition, court records from eastern North Carolina document that wolf bounties were paid from 1768 to 1789, which implies that wolves were in the region then.
