The RPI (rating percentage index) is a formula used by the NCAA selection committee to help determine the field of 65 for the NCAA tournament. The WIS poll is a simulated media poll and looks at who you played (you get more credit for beating a team that’s ranked higher than you), where you play (road wins are more impressive than home wins) and by how much you win or lose. RPI ignores all of these factors (except game location) and relies solely on winning percentages which is why often times the media polls and RPI do not match closely until very late in the season.
