It’s probably got something to do with the properties of lead to shield the effects of the radiation from the outside and to effectively contain all that harmful stuff in a little storage box. I’m sure that there are articles about how exactly lead counteracts and stores the effects of radium. You might want to look into Google and see what the scientific explanation behind it all is.
