What was the purpose of a church steeple?
The church was one of the first public buildings to be constructed in a new settlement. Because most new settlements were in the wilderness, the church was the center of the establishment both physically and socially. The steeple was to be the tallest structure so that travelers and newcomers could see it on the horizon and would know where the center of town was and it would lead them in.
