What are License Plates used for?
License Plates or ‘tags’, as some states call them, are 12 inches wide by 6 inches tall metal plates, with numbers and letters printed or embossed onto the plates. This standard plate size is required by USA federal law. Every state in the United States requires License Plates to be attached to motorized vehicles that travel on public roadways. License plates are used by the state governments to collect vehicle taxes and are used by police to uniquely identify and track vehicles. Most License Plates today are made of aluminum or steel and some plates weigh over half a pound! Texas, Nebraska and Maryland are some of the states with very heavy License Plates. The Quest Most License Plate collectors start out with a few plates and proceed on a quest to obtain a complete set of one License Plate from each of the 50 states. What often begins as a casual collection of a few different states, can turn into a full fledged quest to get the few missing states added to a License Plate collection.
