What is the Kyoto Accord?
On December 10, 1997, negotiations were concluded between 160 countries on an international agreement, the Kyoto Protocol, calling for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in developed countries by the year 2012. In December 2002, Canada ratified its committed to the Protocol to reducing emissions to six per cent below 1990 levels by the period between 2008 and 2012. The Kyoto Accord will come into force once Russia ratifies and this should occur some time in 2003.
