What is the Food Safety Unit?
The Food Safety Unit operates within the Department of Human Services, and comes under the Rural and Regional Health and Aged Care Division. It is responsible for the regulation of food in Victoria, and the administration of the Food Act and the Food Standards Code. The Unit is involved in food recalls, investigating alleged incidents of food borne illness and responding to public health emergencies. The Unit is also a significant contributor to the development of regulation, policy and strategy, and to the education of business and the community on food safety issues. The Unit works closely with local government, state government departments, the Commonwealth, and other state, national and international regulatory bodies. It also has close relationships with industry bodies, community/consumer organisations and training providers.
