What Will Insulated Glass Do?
With double-glazed windows the sealed air space between the panes of glass has a big effect on energy performance. A very thin air space does not insulate as well as a thicker air space because of the conductivity through that small space. If the air space is too wide, however, convection within the glazing will occur and degrade the insulative qualities. The material that separates the two panes of glass in an insulated glass unit is called the spacer. Insulated spacers warm the edge of the window because they do not conduct heat as well as non insulated spacers. This “warm edge” technology saves energy and minimizes condensation.
