Can I grind brown rice in my Nutrimill?
Brown rice seems to be an exception to all the rules when it comes to how quickly it feeds from the hopper to the milling heads. While wheat has a ‘slippery’ surface, brown rice does not. It tends to cling together and feeds slowly. The flow-control valve and the Inlet Cover regulate the flow of grain into the milling heads. As the ‘finer – coarser’ knob is turned to the right – clockwise – the grain flows into the milling heads much more quickly, with coarser textured flour. When the dial is at 9:00 – 11:00 O’ clock, very little grain flows into the milling heads and the resulting flour is finer, but it takes a lot longer to mill. With a little experimenting you’ll find a setting where the grain feeds quickly and with a suitable texture. For bread flour, you should mill a full hopper of wheat in 5 to 7 minutes. Also, occasionally ‘polish’ the grain hopper so the surface is clean and slippery.
