How do car radiators work ?
New radiators are thinner than the older ones.Their purpose is to cool the water that returns hot from the engine via the thermostat and the top hose.As you know hot water rises and this water is driven around the engine by a water pump driven by a fan belt which itself is driven by the crankshaft pulley.Once in the radiator the hot water is cooled by being passed through a series of small bore tubes which are cooled by the outside air assisted by a fan which is either electrically driven or by a belt from the crankshaft pulley. The water passes through the radiator being cooled by the air and then returns to the engine via the bottom hose.It is pumped by the water pump around the water chambers in the engine block cooling the cylinder bores and cylinder head returning to the engine via the top hose.On the way around some of the water is diverted to the heater assenbly, which in itself contains a radiator albeit a small one via a manually or automaticaly controlled valve. The thermostat,
