What are the types of IRB review?
• Exempt Review: Federal regulations “exempt” some types of research from further review by the IRB, however, “Exempt” does NOT mean IRB review is not required! Research that falls into the exempt category still requires an application to be submitted to the IRB for review. The review process for the “exempt” category does not require extensive initial IRB review, and investigators will usually be notified within 1-2 weeks after* submitting their IRB application. Final determination as to whether the research is exempt lies with the IRB administrator.
