I have a 4 cyl mariner I have had for years and it is a very good engine, seems a bit harder on gas than my johnson of the same horsepower but they are on different boats so very difficult to make an actual comparison. I have agree with Noah, Merc and Mariner are the same under the skin, I know all the parts I buy have Mercury numbers. I think the difference is like the difference between Evinrude and Johnson: I.E. none. What you are looking at sounds like a nice motor, I would not be afraid of it.
