The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) is an ongoing long-term clinical trial to determine the benefit vs. risk of female hormone replacement therapy (HRT). While earlier studies indicated definite benefit in the areas of coronary risk and dementia, recent data from the WHI have indicated the opposite. One important distinction is the difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormones. In the WHI, the estrogen used was equine estrogen, made from the urine of pregnant mares. The progestin was a synthetic compound manufactured to mimic natural Progesterone, but is quite a different molecule and is foreign to the human body. There is little wonder that these hormones resulted in more risk than benefit. However, the WHI does give us cause for caution, even in the use of natural bioidentical hormones. There are no long-term studies to prove that bioidentical hormones are safer. However, there are early indications that lead us to believe so. For example, one study showed that synthetics ra
