How does DHEA affect weight control?
Research at Temple University showed that DHEA is effective in animal weight control by blocking an enzyme called G6PDH (glucose-6-phosphate- dehydrogenase) which is responsible for fat tissue production in addition to promoting cancer cell growth. By blocking this enzyme, DHEA’s main benefit is to help burn calories for energy rather than store them as fat. Enhancing Brain Function DHEA is found in higher levels in the brain than in the bloodstream. Dr. Eugene Roberts, a scientist in the forefront of his field of research, found that DHEA enhanced the long-term memory of mice. He believes that it may play a similar role in the human brain function and assist in protecting the brain from senility-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. DHEA and the Body’s Immune System It is believed that DHEA stimulates the body’s immune system by stimulating the body’s lymphocytes, lymphoid organs and immune hormones, protecting it from bacterial and viral infections.
