What are Snow Fences / Snow Traps?
Snow Fence: The purpose of snow fencing is to prevent drifting on the street pavement and protect roadways. Snow fences are not put up to protect private properties. Priorities of the snow fences will be given to areas where public roadways are subject to drifting. Snow fencing will be erected parallel to the roadway and approximately 45m from the road allowance. Snow Traps: This procedure consists of creating parallel windrows of snow to trap drifting snow, is becoming more common in place of erecting snow fences. The Streets Maintenance Division will build snow traps in open areas wherever necessary to minimize drifting. This method has been proven effective and requires less manpower than snow fences. However, drifting will likely occur in problematic areas until enough snow has fallen to build the traps.
