What is sustainable meat?
Sustainable animal husbandry takes its cues from natural systems and attempts to intelligently mimic them: ruminants (like cows and sheep) are given mixed perennial pastures and graze those pastures in the same patterns their wild relatives might; chickens, accustomed to scratching and pecking in the open, are given the opportunity to do just that. Sustainable meat is raised without the use of synthetic hormones and routine doses of antibiotics. We feel it is vital to support local, sustainable farmers who raise animals in an ecologically sound, humane way. New England is well suited to growing perennial pastures for grazing ruminant livestock like cows and sheep. Meat from animals that have grazed on pasture is lower in fat and has higher-quality protein and more omega-3 acids than its corn-fed counterpart.
